Softball Falls Twice In Day Two of Panther Invite
Feb. 15, 2014
ATLANTA, Ga.- The Indiana softball team fell in both of its games in their second day at the Georgia State Panther Invitational in Atlanta, Ga. IU drops to 1-7 on the season after falling 5-1 to Georgia Tech before suffering a 7-1 setback to Tennessee-Martin.
GEORGIA TECH 5, INDIANA 1
A quiet offense hindered the Hoosiers' chances in a 5-1 loss to Georgia Tech in the first of two. Indiana was held hitless until Breana Saucedo sent a single back up the middle in the top of the sixth inning. The Hoosiers would later score in that same frame on a two-out error by Georgia Tech's Alysha Rudnik to give Saucedo the opportunity to score from second base.
Kylie Kleinschmidt improved to 3-0 on the year in the circle after picking up the complete game victory.
The game opened with the Yellow Jackets plating a pair of runs with two away in the first. They later added a pair of runs in the bottom of the fourth with a two-run homerun from Maddie Lionberger,
After the Hoosiers scored on a GT error in the sixth, Georgia Tech's Katie Johnsky homered to set the score to 5-1.
In their final at bat, Indiana put a pair of runners on base but could not scrape together enough offense to overcome its four-run deficit.
UT-MARTIN 7, INDIANA 1
The Hoosiers were held to three hits in their contest with the Skyhawks. Saucedo, Shelby Gogreve and Erin Lehman all reach bases on singles, while Tsirigos reached base for her eighth consecutive contest after drawing a walk in the first inning of play.
Lora Olson (0-4) got the start and is handed the loss after surrendering five earned runs in 2.1 innings.
Brooke Boetjer provided solid innings solid in relief after checking in mid-way through the second inning. The sophomore fanned a career-high nine batters and held UT-Martin to one hit in 4.2 scoreless innings of work.
The Skyhawks attacked early and posted four runs in the opening frame to take an early lead. Indiana looked to chip away at the deficit with a bases loaded situation and no outs in the bottom of the first. Saucedo started the inning with a single through the left side and made her way to third base after consecutive walks were issued to Brianna Meyer and Tsirigos. A wild pitch allowed Saucedo to score and the runners to advance, but a strikeout and a double play would strand a runner and limit IU to one run.
A pair of Indiana errors haunted the Hoosiers in the top of the third as they ultimately allowed a total of four runs to come across and give UT-Martin a 7-1 lead.
Indiana had runners on in the sixth resulting from Kassi Farmer's one-out walk and a single to left from Gogreve. Jenna Abraham walked to load the bases with one away, however a ground ball turned for a double play again foiled the Hoosiers hopes of plating runs with runners in scoring position.
Three straight outs in the seventh would seal the win for UT-Martin and deal Indiana its seventh straight loss of the season.
The Hoosiers will look to bounce back tomorrow in their final day of the Panther Invitational. IU is set for a 10 a.m. game with host Georgia State before closing out the day with ESTU.
