Hoosier Offense Struggles in 5-0 Loss to UC-Santa Barbara
Feb. 16, 2008
SAN DIEGO, Calif. - The Indiana softball team continued play at the Campbell-Cartier Tournament in San Diego, Calif., Saturday morning against the University of California - Santa Barbara Gauchos. The Hoosiers (0-3) offense continued its early struggles and ran into another strong pitching performance from UCSB (2-4) as they fell the Gauchos, 5-0.
The Gauchos scored two runs in the top of the first when Christine Ramos drew a leadoff walk and then stole second. Two outs later, a throwing error by Indiana that would have ended the inning allowed Ramos to score the first run. The next batter drove home the runner from second with a single to give UCSB a 2-0 lead.
Indiana had their own threat in the bottom of the inning, putting runners on second and third with one out. Sarah Padove drove a single to right field and advance to third on Jennilee Huddleston's double deep down the right field line. But Santa Barbara pitcher Lindsey Ramos got the next two batters to escape unharmed.
After a tough first inning, IU freshman pitcher Alyssa Maiese (0-2) settled into a nice groove and held the Gauchos off the scoreboard in each of the next three innings. But in the fifth, the Gauchos got two doubles and two singles in the inning on their way to three runs and a 5-0 lead.
Maiese went the distance in the circle for IU, allowing five run, three earned, on seven hits and striking out five.
The Hoosiers turnaround and play the second game of the day 30 minutes after the conclusion of the game against UCSB, taking on Utah State.
