Indiana 4, Geogia Tech 1
The Indiana softball team dealt No. 24 Georgia Tech its first loss of the season as the Hoosiers won their fifth straight game of the year in a 4-1 win over the Yellow Jackets. The Hoosiers improve to 6-3 and are now 4-0 in the Georgia Tech Classic in Atlanta, Ga.
Lora Olson (3-1) was the winning pitcher for Indiana, throwing 7.0 innings in the circle and holding the Yellow Jackets to one run on four hits with three strikeouts.
The Hoosiers tallied eight hits with multi-hit efforts by Brianna Meyer, Amanda Wagner and Kelsey Dotson. Jena Malmen drove in two runs for Indiana on a 1-for-2 day.
Dotson started things off in the third with an infield single that ricocheted off a diving Georgia Tech infielder. Shelby Gogreve laid down a bunt to move Dotson to second. With two outs, Meyer drove a single through the left side to score Doston and give the Hoosiers a 1-0 lead.
In the fourth, Indiana strung together three more runs on three hits. After Kassi Farmer reached first on a walk, Amanda Wagner hit an infield single to the left side and both advanced 60 feet on a Shannon Cawley sac bunt. Malmen didn't make leave them on base long, as she drove a two-run double to left to increase Indiana's lead to three. Dotson followed with an RBI-double to left to put the score at 4-0 in favor of the Hoosiers.
After being held scoreless through the first four innings, the Yellow Jackets drove in a run on an RBI-triple. Georgia Tech threatened to cut its deficit in that same frame, but Indiana's defense and pitching shut down their efforts and minimize the damage.
In the top of the seventh, Georgia Tech found itself down to its final out. The Yellow Jackets showed some life with a two-out double off the right-center field fence, but a fly out to center field ended the ballgame.
Indiana will again face Georgia Tech tomorrow afternoon in their final game at the Georgia Tech Classic. First pitch is slated for 1 p.m. EST.
