Hoosiers Trounce UAB In USF Tournament Opener
Feb. 18, 2011
CLEARWATER, Fla. - The Hoosiers (3-3) banged out a season-high 12 hits and scored five runs over the final two innings on their way to a 8-2 win over UAB (2-4) Friday at the USF Tournament in Clearwater, Fla. Junior Cassie Gogreve had three hits while Breanna Saucedo and Morgan Melloh both had two hits.
"This was truly a team win," Indiana head coach Michelle Gardner said. "Everyone that came into the game did their job and we were able to escape some early jams with good pitching and defense."
Indiana pitchers stranded 12 UAB runners on base in the game and allowed just three hits to the Blazers.
Indiana broke into the scoring column in the top of the first thanks to a handful of illegal pitches by UAB starting pitcher Alisha Smith. The Blazers responded with a run in the bottom of the first to knot the game at 1-1.
In the Hoosiers half of the second, Sara Olson led off with a single and Gogreve followed with a triple to right center to give IU a 2-1 lead, a lead they would not give up.
Despite numerous threats on the base paths by the UAB offense, the IU pitchers were able to work out of harms way. Olson starting in the circle but struggled with her control, issuing four walks in her two innings of work. Jessica Dobson came on in relief to start the third inning and picked up a strike out but also issued two walks and was relieved by Melloh.
The Fishers, Ind., native was dominant in 4.2 innings of work, striking out seven and walking just one as she improved to 2-3 on the year.
In the sixth inning, Morgan Melloh singled with one out and Olson drew a walk to put two on for Gogreve. The junior catcher singled to the right side to load the bases and one out later Amanda Wagner delivered a two-run single to make the score 5-1 in favor of the Hoosiers. A throwing error by UAB attempting a pickoff plated Gogreve to make it 6-1.
After UAB scored one in the bottom of the sixth, Melloh drove in her first run with a single up the middle and Olson's RBI groundout made it 8-2.
Indiana will play DePaul later Friday night with the new estimated start time of 8:45pm ET.
