LAS VEGAS -
Freshman pitcher Lora Olson came to throw four innings of one-run relief to get the win and also hit a game-tying two-run home run in the fourth inning to help build momentum and help Indiana (3-6) to the 8-5 comeback win over Memphis at the Louisville Slugger Desert Classic hosted by UNLV.
Indiana banged out nine hits in the game - all by different players - and six different players logged RBI's in the game.
Olson (2-4) came on in relief of Murphy in the fourth inning and went on to finish the game, surrendering one run on three hits and four strikeouts to earn the win. Meaghan Murphy started the game and pitched the first three-plus innings, giving up four runs (three earned) on seven hits with one walk and one strikeout.
Memphis manufactured a run in the top of the first inning, culminating with a two out RBI single to take the 1-0 lead. But the Hoosiers responded in the bottom of the frame when Jenna Abraham singled and then moved to second on a wild pitch. Amanda Wagner took advantage by lacing a single back up the middle to score Abraham and tie the game, 1-1.
Indiana took the lead in the second inning on Breanna Saucedo's fielder's choice with the bases loaded. But that lead was short lived, as Memphis plated three runs in the top of the third inning to take a 4-2 lead.
In the bottom of the fourth inning, the Indiana bats came alive. Jena Malmen drew a one out walk and Lora Olson followed with a two-run home run to left center on the first pitch she saw for her first collegiate hit to tie the game, 4-4.
Then in the fifth inning, Wagner and Cassie Gogreve were hit by pitch with one out and Shannon Cawley singled back up the middle to score Wagner from second base on a close play at the plate. Malmen followed with a single to left that scored another run and the Hoosiers had a 6-4 lead.
Memphis hit a solo home run to lead off the sixth inning against Olson but the right-hander was not fazed, as she went on to retire the next three hitters in order for the Tigers.
In the Hoosiers half of the sixth, Saucedo led off with a single and went to third base on Samantha Berenter's double off the left field wall. A passed ball pushed across the seventh run of the game for Indiana ahead of Gogreve's double to left that made it 8-5.
Olson was in complete control in the top of the seventh inning, and got some sparkling defensive help in the inning from Berenter at second base to close the door on any rally attempt by the Tigers.
Indiana returns to action next weekend at the Phyllis Rafter Memorial Tournament hosted by Kennesaw State in Kennesaw, Ga., just outside of Atlanta. Free audio will be available for all Indiana games during the weekend by going to IUHoosiers.com.
