Indiana Wraps Up Winning Weekend With 7-3 Win Over Ole Miss
Feb. 20, 2011
CLEARWATER, Fla. - The Indiana University softball team improved to 5-5 on the year with a 7-3 victory over the Ole Miss Rebels Sunday at the USF Tournament. The Hoosiers finish the weekend with a 3-2 mark and hit .329 as a team.
"We really wanted to get this win today and finish the tournament with a winning record," Indiana head coach Michelle Gardner said. "It was excited to see our bats come alive today and it just seems like it has been someone different each game that has stepped up to lead us."
Ole Miss (2-8) scored two runs in the top of the third inning on a 3-run triple by RT Cantillo. But that would be all the offense the Rebels would be able to muster against IU starting pitcher Morgan Melloh.
Indiana did not let the early deficit faze them as they used a pair of Ole Miss errors to push across three runs of their own in the bottom of the third inning to tie the game. Sara Olson forced in the first run as she hit a ground ball to shortstop and she attempted to throw home to get Breanna Saucedo streaking for the plate. The throw was not in time and IU cut the Ole Miss lead to 3-1. Then with runners at second and third, Amanda Wagner hit a hard ground ball to second base that was misplayed and both runners crossed the plate to knot the score at 3-3.
The Indiana bats went back to work in the fifth inning and again it was Sara Olson right in the middle of the action as she singled to left to start things off. Another Ole Miss error on a ground ball by Wagner put two on with one out for Meaghan Murphy. The freshman from Golden, Colo., drilled an outside pitch down the right field line into the corner for a triple that plated two runs and Indiana was looking at a 5-3 lead. Morgan Melloh soon followed with a RBI single through the right side to up the advantage to 6-3.
In the sixth inning, Heather Nelson singled up the middle and Samantha Berenter drew a walk to put two on for Olson, who delivered another hit to load the bases. Jenna Abraham reached on an RBI fielder's choice and the Indiana lead increased to 7-3.
While the Indiana bats kept the pressure on, Melloh (4-5) was busy dominating the Ole Miss batters for eight strikeouts in six inning to earn her fourth win of the year and third this weekend. She allowed three runs on five hits and did not walk a batter in the game.
Ole Miss finished the game with five errors and just three of the IU runs were earned as a result.
The Hoosiers will be in Palm Springs, Calif., next week for the Cathedral City Classic starting on Thursday.
