Bergeson's Slam Leads Hoosiers In Rout of UC Riverside
Feb. 21, 2009
TALLAHASSEE, Fla. - Senior shortstop Emily Bergeson hit a grand slam to cap a 5-run fourth inning for Indiana on its way to a 6-0 win over UC Riverside at the Seminole Classic hosted by Florida State. Sara Olson went the distance in the circle and struckout five en route to the shutout victory.
The scoring started for the Hoosiers (1-7) in the bottom of the third inning when freshman Heather Nelson drew a leadoff walk and was followed by Bergeson, who also walked. The runners were still at first and second two outs later after Riverside starting pitcher Stephanie Marshall (0-3) struck out the next two Hoosiers. Senior first baseman Stephanie Pellerito stepped in and delivered a clutch two-out single down the right field line that allowed Nelson to score the first run of the game. It marked the first time this season that Indiana has broken into scoring column first in a game.
The Indiana outburst in the fourth inning started with a leadoff single to right field by freshman Samantha Berenter and was followed by a single up the middle by sophomore Brittany Stein. Senior Julie DiNallo was hit by a pitch to load the bases for freshman Heather Nelson. The Riverside, Calif., native drew a bases loaded walk to push across the second run of the game for Indiana. Bergeson stepped in and worked the count to 2-2 before she crushed the next pitch deep over the left center field wall for a grand slam and her second home run of the season.
Riverside (2-7) came to bat in the top of the fifth inning looking to answer the outburst that IU just put up in the bottom of the fourth but Olson (1-2) had other ideas. She surrendered two singles with one out and then issued a two-out walk to load the bases but induced a lazy fly ball to center field to maintain the 6-0 lead of Indiana.
Stein finished the game with two hits for the second time in her career while Bergeson's grand slam is the first by a Hoosier since Sara Olson did so against Illinois on April 25, 2008. Sophomore Kelsey Stander extended her hit streak to three games with her bunt single in the sixth inning.
For Olson, it is her first career shutout and her fifth career complete game while five strikeouts equals a season high for IU pitchers this season.
