Glueckert's Walk-Off Single Gives Hoosiers 5-4 Win Over Oregon
Feb. 21, 2010
LAS VEGAS - Indiana Senior Jennifer Glueckert lined a single into right center field with two outs in the bottom of the seventh inning to plate the game-winning run and give Indiana its first win against a Pac-10 team since 1998. Redshirt senior Monica Wright went the distance in the circle to earn her first win of the season.
The Hoosiers (2-3) held a 4-2 lead going to the sixth inning, but Oregon (6-4) scored one in the sixth and one in the top of the seventh to tie it up. Then in the bottom of the seventh, the first two Indiana batters were retired in order. Junior Sara Olson stepped to the plate, having already hit a home run in the game, was intentionally walked. Junior Cassie Gogreve followed with a two-strike double to right to put runners at second and third with two outs for Glueckert. The South Bend, Ind., native wasted little time getting the job done as she drilled the second pitch she saw into the right center gap for her third hit of the game and the celebration was on.
Wright (1-0) was the story for the Hoosiers, tossing her first complete game since April 27, 2008. She was able to get out of a couple jams in the late innings and used her defense to keep her in it. She ended up allowing four earned runs on eight hits to go with four walks and three strikeouts.
The Ducks broke into the scoring column first with a pair of runs in the top of the second on an RBI triple. But the Hoosiers got back-to-back home runs from Olson and Gogreve, the first time Indiana has hit back-to-back home runs since March 18, 2007, when Tory Yamaguchi and Jennilee Huddleston went did it against Chattanooga.
In the third inning, Amanda Wagner drew a one out walk and came around to score later in the inning on a wild pitch to make it 3-0. Olson reached on a fielder's choice and was replaced on the base paths by Kelli Ritchison and she would cross the plate on a RBI double off the bat of Glueckert, making it 4-2.
Indiana was also flashing the leather throughout the game as well. First it was Gluckert coming up with a flyball in left field and then firing a strike to first base to catch the Oregon runner off the base for a double play. Samantha Heyman made a tremendous running catch on a sinking line drive at her shoe tops later in the game and Gogreve made a diving catch into the fence behind home plate on a foul pop up.
The last time Indiana defeated a team from the Pac-10 Conference was March 5, 1998, when the Hoosiers defeated UCLA by a score of 6-2. The win was also the 199th in the career for IU head coach Michelle Gardner.
