Hoosiers Close Desert Classic With Loss to UNLV
Feb. 21, 2010
LAS VEGAS - The Indiana softball team once again got on the board in the top of the first inning, but the UNLV (7-3) bats were ready to go as well and came away with a 13-2 win in five innings on Sunday. It was the final game of the weekend for the Hoosiers (2-5) at the Louisville Slugger Desert Classic hosted by UNLV. Samantha Berenter had two hits and an RBI and Sara Olson added her sixth RBI of the season for Indiana.
Freshman Samantha Heyman reached on an infield single with one out and then made an outstanding base running play to get into scoring position. She took a big lead off first on the first pitch to the next batter and when the UNLV catcher threw to first base to pick her off she darted for second base and made it easily. This proved to be key because Olson followed two batters later with a two-out double deep into the gap in left center to give Indiana a 1-0 lead.
Unfortunately, that lead would be short-lived because UNLV plated four runs in the bottom of the inning on a pair of home runs. UNLV pitcher Traci Odegard kept the Indiana bats quiet the next two innings while the Rebels scored five more runs in the bottom of the third inning to take a 9-1 lead.
In the top of the fourth inning, Cassie Gogreve led off with a double all the way to the wall in left center, her second of the season. Two batters later, Gogreve was standing at third base with two outs and Berenter at the plate. The sophomore promptly delivered a sharp single through the left side of the infield for her second RBI of the season.
But UNLV added four more in the bottom of the fourth and invoked the run-rule in the bottom of the fifth for the win.
Sara Olson (1-3) struggled in the circle for Indiana, allowing eight runs on seven hits with two walks and two strikeouts in two innings of work. Freshman Jessica Dobson came on in relief and allowed five runs, four earned, on three hits and three walks. Redshirt senior Monica Wright pitched the final inning and did not allow a run on two hits to go along with a pair of strikeouts.
For the weekend, Cassie Gogreve hit .429 with two home runs, two doubles and three RBI in addition to throwing out 4-of-9 runners attempting to steal. Entering Sunday, her five runners caught stealing was tops in the Big Ten. Olson and Amanda Wagner also had two home runs apiece and six different Hoosiers drove in at least one run.
The Hoosiers will be back in action next weekend at the Southern Miss Invitational in Hattiesburg, Miss., starting at 3 p.m. ET against Jackson State.
