Hoosiers Can't Overcome Fast Start By East Carolina
Feb. 22, 2009
TALLAHASSEE, Fla. - Junior Jennifer Glueckert legged out a pair of triples and drove in a run but the East Carolina Pirates scored six times in the first and went on to claim a 8-3 win over the Hoosiers at the Seminole Classic hosted by Florida State University. Sophomore Kelsey Stander had three hits and an RBI in the losing effort for the Hoosiers.
Glueckert started the Indiana (1-9) rally in the bottom of the first inning with a leadoff triple, the first of her career. Sophomore Kelsey Stander brought her in with an infield single to trim the ECU lead to 6-1. The rally didn't stop there as sophomore Brittany Stein and freshman Samantha Berenter both drew walks to load the bases with two outs. Senior Julie DiNallo stepped in with a chance to add to the inning for the Hoosiers and appeared to go down swinging at the third strike but the ECU (6-5) catcher let the ball get passed her so she reached first base safely and a run scored to make it 6-2.
The Pirates added a run in the top of the second after a leadoff single was followed by an RBI double to right field that could have been a triple if not for Glueckert, who started the relay that ended with ECU's Jessica Johnson being tagged out at third base.
In the fourth inning, Glueckert drew a one-out walk and moved up to second after an infield single by Stander. But both would be stranded, two of the nine left on base in the game by Indiana, when Stein grounded into a fielder's choice that ended the inning.
Indiana did add to its run total in the bottom of the sixth inning when pinch hitter Bridget Langan laced a single to left that got past the left fielder and allowed Langan to advance to second in her first-ever plate appearance. Starting shortstop Kristin King re-entered the game to run for Langan and moved up to third on a wild pitch and then came home on Glueckert's second triple of the day.
East Carolina added an insurance run in the top of the seventh on another Johnson double, her second of the game.
Monica Wright (0-2) struggled in the first inning for the Hoosiers, recording just one out while ECU got five runs on four hits and one walk. Alyssa Maiese came on and was solid in relief, pitching the final 6.2 innings and giving up three runs on eight hits and a career high eight strikeouts.
