Hoosiers Fall to No. 4 Florida at Cathedral City Classic
Feb. 24, 2011
PALM SPRINGS, Calif. - The Indiana softball team ran into a strong fourth-ranked University of Florida on Thursday at the Cathedral City Classic and suffered a 7-0 defeat to the Gators. Breanna Saucedo and Lindsay Callanan recorded the only hits in the game for Indiana (5-6) against UF starting pitcher Hannah Rogers.
Indiana starting pitcher Morgan Melloh (4-6) was up and down in the circle as she recorded a season-high 14 strikeouts but also issued a career-high nine walks in the game. The 14 strikeouts is the most since May 7, 2010, when she had 16 strikeouts against Louisiana Tech.
Saucedo led off the game for Indiana by working Rogers to a full count before lining the next pitch back up the middle for a single. She would end the inning stranded at first base and was one of six runners left on base in the game. Lindsay Callanan collected a single up the middle in the fifth inning and was on base three times (fielder's choice and hit by pitch).
Florida (10-0) scored two runs in the third inning on a sacrifice fly and then an RBI single back up the middle. In the sixth inning, the Gators worked four walks from Melloh and two of those came with the bases loaded to increase the UF lead to 4-0. The next batter laced a single up the middle to plate two more runs and make it a 6-0 deficit for the Hoosiers.
The Gators added their seventh run of the game in the seventh inning on an RBI double.
Rogers improved to 4-0 on the year by allowing two hits and striking out seven while issuing two walks. Melloh allowed seven earned runs on seven hits in addition to the 14 strikeouts and nine walks.
Indiana returns to action at 9:00 p.m. ET against San Diego State. Live audio is available through IUHoosiers with Dave Leno calling the action.
