WOODSTOCK, Ga. -
A couple of fielding errors in the bottom of the seventh inning proved costly for Indiana (7-7) as they suffered a 3-2 loss to the Bradley Braves (7-8) in the final game of the Phyllis Rafter Memorial. Jenna Abraham and Samantha Berenter both had two hits for Indiana who finishes the weekend 4-1.
The Hoosiers logged nine hits in the game and took a 2-1 lead into the bottom of the seventh inning. But the Braves used a couple of hits and a couple of Indiana errors in the field to tie the game and eventually get the win.
The game was scoreless going to the fifth inning when Samantha Heyman led off the inning with a single to center field. She moved to second on the groundout by Saucedo and then came around to score when the Bradley centerfielder misplayed the ball, giving Indiana the 1-0 lead.
After Bradley came back to tie the game at 1-1 in the bottom of the fifth, IU went back on the attack starting with Berenter's single through the left side. Brianna Meyer hit the next pitch up the middle and some miscommunication by the Bradley infield allowed both Berenter and Meyer to reach safely. Kelsey Brannon put down a text book sacrifice bunt to move the runners into scoring position. Sophomore Jena Malmen was brought in as a pinch hitter and she delivered a single over the shortstop's head that plated a run to give IU the 2-1 edge.
Olson (5-5) was saddled with the loss for Indiana, giving up three runs - two earned - on seven hits with a walk and four strikeouts. Meaghan Murphy came on with bases loaded in the seventh inning and threw a wild pitch to allow the tying run to score and then the ground ball on the infield that was misplayed, allowing the winning run to score.
Indiana will play next weekend in Fullerton, Calif., at the Demarini Invitational on the campus of Cal State Fullerton. Free audio and live stats will be available at IUHoosiers.com in addition to live in-game updates on twitter.com/IUSoftball.
