HATTIESBURG, Miss. - The Indiana softball team took advantage of four errors by Jackson State and exploded for six runs in the bottom the fourth inning on its way to an 8-0 victory over the Tigers in five innings. The game was played at Southern Miss Softball Complex as part of the Southern Miss Invitational. Freshman pitcher Jessica Dobson gave up just one hit over five innings to pick up her first collegiate victory.

"We took advantage of some of their miscues but we also hit the ball around a little bit and put some runs on the board," Indiana head coach Michelle Gardner said. "And Dobson was outstanding in the circle. She was really on top of her game and kept their batters off balance the entire game."

Dobson's final line showed five innings pitched, one hit allowed and six strikeouts to set career-bests in all three categories.

All eight of the Indiana (3-5) runs were unearned and it started in the top of the first inning when the IU leadoff batter, Breanna Sauced, slapped a single into left and then stole second. Samantha Heyman reached on a throwing error by Jackson State (3-6) to allow Saucedo to score easily and give Indiana the 1-0 lead.

The Hoosiers threated again in the bottom of the second inning, loading the bases with no outs. But JSU pitcher Tynette Sims induced a pair of ground ball to the left side for two force outs at the plate and then got the third out on a groundball to first base.

While Dobson continued to be on cruise control, the Indiana offense got on track on the bottom of the fourth, scoring six unearned runs on two errors by the Tigers . Saucedo singled to center to drive in the first run of the inning and was followed by Samantha Heyman's run-scoring single. Amanda Wagner followed suit with a RBI single before Sara Olson lined a double to left center and Cassie Gogreve laced a double down the left field line to plate a pair of runs to give Indiana a 7-0 lead.

Then in the bottom of the fifth inning, Jennifer Glueckert reached on an error and was replaced on first by Kelli Ritchison, who promptly stole second. After moving over to third on a ground out by Samantha Berenter, she beat the throw home on a slow roller to second base for the game-winning run.

Indiana will play its second game of the day at 8:00 p.m. ET / 7:00 p.m. CT, when they take on Southern Miss.
