Hoosiers Claim 1-0 Victory Over Loyola Marymount to Conclude Cathedral City Classic
Feb. 27, 2011
PALM SPRINGS, Calif. - Indiana's Cassie Gogreve lined a RBI single in the top of the fifth inning and senior Morgan Melloh (6-7) made it stand in a 1-0 victory over Loyola Marymount at the Cathedral City Classic. The Hoosiers (8-7) finish the weekend with a 3-2 record and improve to 8-7 overall on the season.
It is the best start to a season for the Hoosiers since 1997, when Indiana was 10-5 through its first 15 games of the season.
"I like how we were able finish the weekend after a tough loss on Friday to Cal," Indiana head coach Michelle Gardner said. "We pounded out 11 hits against Fullerton and then came back and hit the ball against LMU and were able to get one run and that proved to be enough."
Melloh was the story of the game early as she recorded strikeouts for each of the first nine outs with one walk mixed in. She finished with her eighth complete game of the season and 103rd of her career. It is also her first shutout in an IU uniform and the 43rd of her career. With her 11 strikeouts in the game, her career total now stands at 1,230 and she had 47 strikeouts in four games over the weekend in just 30.2 innings of work.
Indiana got a one-out single from Ashley Warrum and a walk from Sara Olson in the first inning but were not able to collect the run-scoring hit and stranded the two of their nine runners on base in the game. Warrum led off the top of the third inning with a triple down the left field line but was not able to cross the plate in the inning and the game remained scoreless.
Warrum was back at it in the fourth inning as she stepped in with runners at the corners and two outs. The freshman from Pendleton Heights, Ind., hit a screaming line drive up the middle that seemed destined for the outfield and her first career RBI but a diving catch by the LMU shortstop kept the Hoosiers off the board.
In the fifth inning, Meaghan Murphy drilled an outside pitch into the gap in right center for her first double of the season. Cassie Gogreve followed with a rocket down the first base line that ricocheted off the glove of the first baseman and rolled into foul territory. As the ball trickled away, Murphy was running hard from second base the whole time and slid into home just ahead of the tag and Indiana had a 1-0 lead.
From there, Melloh took over and struck out three over the final two innings and did not allow the Lions to mount any form of a comeback.
Indiana hits the road again next weekend to take part in the Bulldog Invitational in Athens, Ga., hosted by the University of Georgia. The Hoosiers will play Chattanooga, Campbell, James Madison and No. 1 Georgia. Live audio of all five games will be available on IUHoosiers.com with Dave Leno calling all the play-by-play action.
