Two Unearned Runs Lift Auburn Past Indiana, 2-1
Feb. 28, 2009
FULLERTON, Calif. - The Auburn Tigers used some shaky Indiana defense to score both of their runs and hand Indiana starting pitcher Sara Olson the tough-luck loss, 2-1 on Saturday at the DeMarini Invitational hosted by Cal State Fullerton. Olson (1-3) went the distance for Indiana and gave up two unearned runs on four hits but suffered the loss.
The Hoosiers (1-13) manufactured their run in the top of the sixth inning and it started with a pinch-hit leadoff walk by Jennifer Glueckert. Kelsey Stander followed with a bunt single and the runners moved to second and third on a sacrifice bunt by Heather Nelson. Following a groundout by Kelli Ritchison, Brittany Stein drew a two-out walk to load the bases for Olson. Olson wasted little time putting the ball in play, hitting a hard ground ball to Auburn shortstop Tatiana Fernandez, who mishandled it allowing Glueckert to score from third and bring IU to within a run at 2-1. The Tigers (16-4) escaped the bases loaded situation without any further damage when Jenee Loree (7-2) struck out Stephanie Pellerito for the third out.
Auburn scored its first run in the bottom of the fourth inning on a double steal and a throwing error by Indiana catcher Brittany Stein. With runners at first and second, they both took off on the pitch and Stein's throw to third base was a little wide and got away from shortstop Kristin King covering and went into left field to allow the runner to score.
In the bottom of the fifth, a throwing error on a comebacker to Olson in the circle allowed the second unearned run to score for Auburn.
Olson's final line showed two unearned runs on four hits with two walks and one strikeout. With the spectacular outing from Olson, she lowered her team leading ERA to 1.85 in 30.1 innings. It was also her second complete game in as many starts and she has not allowed an earned run in either of those starts.
