Feb. 28, 2010
HATTIESBURG, Miss. - Following a tough loss to Souther Miss late Saturday night, the Hoosiers (4-6) rebounded for a 5-1 win over Central Arkansas (5-9) at the Southern Miss Invitational on Saturday morning. Amanda Wagner and Samantha Berenter both had two hits in support of Sara Olson (2-3) in the cirlce, who picked up the win.
It was a picture perfect top of the first for Indiana, as leadoff batter freshma Breanna Saucedo singled and then moved to second on a sacrifice bunt by freshman Samantha Heyman. Another freshman, Amanda Wagner, followed with an RBI single through the right side to make it 1-0.
In the fourth, junior Cassie Gogreve ledoff with a single and senior Jennifer Glueckert was hit by the pitch to put the first two on for Berenter. The sophomore from Poway, Calif., tried to get the sacrifice bunt down on the first two pitches but was unsuccessful. Being forced to swing the bat, Berenter drilled the next pitch into the right center gap and the Hoosiers had a 3-0 lead. Later in the inning, an RBI double from Kristin King, her first RBI of the season, made it 4-0 in favor of Indiana.
Central Arkansas pushed across a run in the bottom of the fourth, but the Hoosiers got it right back in the top of the fifth on an RBI groundout by Gogreve to score Wagner, who had doubled to start the inning.
Olson was on cruise control for most of the game to earn her second victory of the season. She gave up one run on four hits in six-plus innings while fanning two Central Arkansas batters. Jessica Dobson came on to close out the game and did not allow a hit in one inning of work.
