Hoosiers Lose Wild One-Run Game to Oregon State
Feb. 28, 2009
FULLERTON, Calif. - Sara Olson hit a three-run home run to help her cause in the circle but the Hoosiers committed four errors that led to six unearned runs for Oregon State in an 8-7 loss to the Beavers. Three different Hoosiers collected two hits and seven different Hoosiers scored runs in the loss.
Olson got the Indiana offense started right from the start, blasting her first home run of the season to dead center field after the first two batters of the game reached base for Indiana (1-14).
Oregon State (9-9) scored its first run in the bottom of the second inning after back-to-back errors put two on with one out. Following a popout, Nikki Chandler singled to left field to score the runner from second base and make it a 3-1 advantage for IU.
Indiana tried to get that run back and then some in the top of the third inning. Kelli Ritchison started the rally with a leadoff walk and was followed by Brittany Stein's sharp single off the OSU third baseman's glove. Stein was lifted for Brittany Devitt pinch running at first base before Sara Olson drew a walk to load the bases with no outs. After Jennifer Glueckert grounded into a fielder's choice that cut down a run at the plate, Stephanie Pellerito singled through the left side to increase the IU lead to 4-1.
The Hoosiers added another run in the top of the fourth inning when Kelsey Stander reached base on a fielder's choice and then stole second base, her second stolen base of the game, to get into scoring position. Heather Nelson then dropped a bunt down the third base line that was fielded cleanly by Alana Ford but her throw to first base was wild and allowed Stander to score from second base to make the Indiana lead 5-1.
The Beavers clawed back into the game in the bottom of the fourth inning with three runs, two on a home run from Stefanie Ewing and a sacrifice fly from Ford to bring OSU to within one run, 5-4.
Stein started the top of the fifth inning by drawing a walk, one of the five Indiana drew on the night. She moved up to second base on a wild pitch and then came all the way around to score on a throwing error on an infield single by Jennifer Glueckert, giving Indiana 6-4 lead going to the bottom of the fifth.
But that's when the Indiana defense began to falter and allowed the Beavers to score four unearned runs in the frame. A passed ball and a two fielding errors set the table for OSU's Alana Ford to come through with a two-run single with the score tied to put Oregon State ahead for good, 8-6.
In the seventh, with the Hoosiers down to their final three outs, they battled back to load the bases with no outs on two base hits and a fielder's choice. Pinch hitter Emily Bergeson was hit by a pitch to force home the first run of the inning and keep the bases loaded. But there is when the Hoosiers' luck started to turn for the worse. Julie DiNallo hit a line drive to second base that was caught and thrown to third base for a double play. The Beavers were then able to induce a ground ball to third base for the final out of the game and a wild 8-7 win over Indiana.
Olson started the game and pitched the first four innings, allowing five runs, two earned, on four hits and one strikeout. Alyssa Maiese (0-5) came on in relief and allowed two unearned runs without allowing a hit and striking out one but was credited with the loss. Ashley Hobbs then came on to get the final five outs and gave up an unearned run of her own on two hits and two walks.
Indiana returns to the field for its final game of the DeMarini Invitational on Sunday against Cal Poly at 9:00 a.m. PT/12:00 p.m. ET.
