Final: Cal Poly 10, Indiana 3
FULLERTON, Calif. – The Indiana softball team fell to Cal Poly 10-3 in its opening game of the Easton Invitational in Fullerton, Calif. this afternoon.
Indiana connected on six hits compared to the Mustangs’ 14, and made two errors that attributed to four unearned runs late in the contest.
Lora Olson is issued the loss and falls to 5-3 on the year. The sophomore gave up three runs on five hits and struck out four in 4.2 innings of work.
Freshman Brooke Boetjer entered the game in the top of the fifth and threw 2.1 innings before Olson returned to the circle to close out the remainder of the game.
The Hoosiers did not connect on a hit until the bottom of the fourth inning on a leadoff bunt single by Brianna Meyer that caught the Mustangs’ defense off guard. She would remain stranded at first as the following three Hoosier batters were retired in order.
Looking at a 3-0 deficit in the bottom of the fifth, Indiana strung together some key hits with two outs to cut the Mustangs’ lead to just one run. Jenna Abraham ignited the Hoosiers’ scoring efforts with a slow-bouncing single to shortstop and moved to third on a Shelby Gogreve line drive double that rolled down the leftfield line. With runners at now at second and third, Samantha Heyman managed to find some green in shallow centerfield that allowed both Abraham and Gogreve to score.
A pair of Indiana errors in the top of the sixth allowed Cal Poly to take a 10-2 lead as the game crept into the bottom of the seventh.
Michelle Huber was called upon to pinch hit for Indiana and did not disappoint, as she drove a single through the right side to put a runner on base. After Huber moved to second on a wild pitch, Gogreve was hit by a pitch to place runners at first and second for the Hoosiers. Heyman advanced the runners to second and third on a ground out to first, allowing Meyer to drive in a run on a ground ball out to the shortstop. Cawley laced a deep ball to right, but Cal Poly’s Cami Brown pulled it in for out number three.
Indiana will take the field again at 6:45 p.m. this evening to take on host Cal State Fullerton in their second game of the Easton Invitational.
