TUCSON, Ariz. – Rainy weather in Tucson resulted in a number of delays and postponed the conclusion of the Hoosiers’ contest with Valparaiso this afternoon in the top of the fifth inning. Indiana did manage to complete its opening game of the day in a 7-2 loss to Longwood before rain washed out the conclusion of their second contest of the day.

Indiana and Valpo will resume the remainder of that contest in Boise next weekend as both teams will be in Idaho playing in the Spring Hill Suites Invitational. That game will continue play with an Indiana 5-0 lead in the top of the fifth with a runner on third and two outs. Start time to resume that contest has not yet been determined.

    LONGWOOD 7, INDIANA 2

Indiana tallied five hits in their loss to Longwood, with Brianna Meyer going 2-for-2 to lead the Hoosiers at the plate. Breanna Saucedo also singled and scored a run, while Natalie Lalich drove in an RBI on a 1-for-3 game and Kassi Farmer added a hit for Indiana.

Longwood connected on 12 hits; however, a majority was assisted by the swirling winds in the outfield. Changing wind speeds and direction shifts created problems for both teams in the outfield as it caught the defense off balance in a number of situations.

Meaghan Murphy (0-6) suffers the loss after surrendering five runs on six hits in 1.2 innings of work. Brooke Boetjer finished the final 4.1 innings where she allowed two earned runs on six hits while striking out a pair of Lancer hitters.

Longwood took the lead in the first inning using three hits to drive in a run and take a 1-0 lead.

The Lancers drove in four in the following frame to pull ahead 5-0, prompting a change in the circle for Indiana. Boetjer held the Lancers scoreless until the fourth inning where Longwood used a sacrifice fly and an RBI double to increase its lead to 7-0.

The Hoosiers responded in the sixth with a pair of runs to cut the deficit to five. Saucedo and Meyer singled to start the frame setting up an RBI-single from Lalich. Meyer would eventually score on a sac fly from CaraMia Tsirigos, but that would be as close as Indiana would get, falling in an eventual 7-2 final.

INDIANA 5, VALPO 0 (Suspended in the top of the fifth)

The Hoosiers and Crusaders will have to wait until next weekend to complete their game as it was suspended due to rain. The game will resume in the top of the fifth with Jenna Abraham on third, Boetjer at the plate with two away and a 5-0 IU lead.

The Hoosiers scored all five of those runs in the top of the second inning that was temporarily interrupted in one of three rain delays throughout the game. Back-to-back walks to Kelsey Dotson and Abraham preceded an RBI-single from Shelby Gogreve, putting Indiana ahead, 1-0. After a rain delay, play resumed with an Erin Lehman RBI-single to left that gave the Hoosiers a two run advantage. After a one-out walk loaded the bases, Meyer followed suit with a free pass to send in Indiana’s third run of the ballgame. With bases still loaded, Lalich put Indiana up 5-0 on a two-run double to dead center field.

After two scoreless innings, Abraham connected on a two-out triple to give IU a runner in the top of the fifth. It would be during Boetjer’s at bat that the game would be called, suspending play with a 5-0 score.

Indiana is scheduled to play Arizona tomorrow at 3 p.m. ET, however that could change pending on the weather. Stay tuned to IUHoosiers.com for further updates.
