IU Rallies In Crunch Time To Pull Out 7-5 Win Versus Florida International
March 3, 2012
FULLERTON, Calif. - The Indiana Hoosiers led the game early thanks to some sloppy defensive play by Florida International but when the Panthers rallied to tie the game in the fifth inning, IU responded with a pair of runs to come away with the 7-5 victory.
Sophomore Meaghan Murphy came on in relief of Lora Olson in the fifth inning and picked up the win to improve to 3-3 on the year. She gave up one run on three hits and two walks. Olson was solid in her 4.1 innings of work, surrendering four runs - three earned - on eight hits while striking out three.
Indiana got on the board in the first inning when Breanna Saucedo reached on an infield single and then moved to second base on the throwing error. Meyer put down a perfect bunt for a single to move Saucedo to third with no outs. Meyer broke for second on the next pitch and go into a rundown, allowing Saucedo to score from third base. An errant throw home from the FIU defense allowed Meyer to eventually advance all the way to third base. Then with one out, Shannon Cawley lifted a sacrifice fly to center field to give IU a 2-0 lead.
Then in the third inning, Jenna Abraham drew a leadoff walk and moved to second on the sacrifice bunt by Cawley. When Wagner was retired on a deep fly ball to center field, Abraham easily moved to third base and the throw in from the outfield got away, allowing Abraham to score to make it 3-0.
Florida International got a run back in the bottom of the third inning but Indiana countered with a pair of runs in the fifth inning. Saucedo started the inning with a walk and moved to second on a sac bunt by Meyer. After Cawley walked, a wild pitch put both runners in scoring position for Wagner. The third baseman delivered with a double to left center field to make it 5-2 in favor of the Hoosiers.
The lead would be short lived as the Panthers score three runs in the bottom of the frame to tie the game at 5-5. Murphy came on in relief of Olson in the inning with a couple runners on base and allowed them to come around to score but was able to escape with the game tied.
In the top of the sixth, Heyman laced a one-out single ahead of a walk by Saucedo and single by Brianna Meyer to load the bases. Following a FIU pitching change, Heather Nelson's ground out to second base allowed Heyman to score the go-ahead run.
After Murphy retired the Panthers in the bottom of the sixth inning, Heyman came through with a RBI single in the seventh to give IU some breathing room at 7-5 going to the bottom of the seventh. Murphy was once against up to the task as she worked around a walk to close out the game.
