FULLERTON, Calif. - Indiana junior Cassie Gogreve hit a three-run home run to bring the Hoosiers to within a run, but North Carolina (12-3) righted the ship and held on over the final two innings to hand the Hoosiers their second loss of the day at the DeMarini Invitational, 7-5. Freshman Samantha Heyman had a pair of RBI singles in the game for Indiana (5-8) while Kelsey Stander scored a pair of runs.

North Carolina plated a run in the top of the first inning thanks to an Indiana error and then added five more in the second inning, but they were not in a conventional fashion. Indiana starting pitcher Jessica Dobson retired the first batter, but the next three reached in order to load the bases. Indiana head coach Michelle Gardner then brought in Monica Wright to try to get out of the jam. The redshirt senior was called for illegal pitches on each of the next three pitches to clear the bases and give UNC a 5-0 lead. They would go on to add another later in the inning to take a 6-0 lead through the first inning and a half.

Indiana tried to rally back in the bottom of the third inning when Heyman drove in Stander with a sharp RBI single back up the middle with two outs. The Hoosiers were back at it in the bottom of the fifth when Amanda Wagner and Breanna Saucedo reach via UNC errors to set the table for the middle of the order. Heyman came up big once again to plate the second run and then Gogreve followed with her third home run of the season to trim the lead to 7-5.

All of the damage was done off Constance Orr for the Tar Heels, who came on in releif of Amber Johnson, who went the first four innings and allowed just one hit and one run. Orr gave up four unearned runs on two hits before Johnson (6-2) returned and did not allow Indiana to get any closer. Johnson's final line showed 6.1 innings pitched, two hits and one unearned run to go along with 10 strikeouts.

Jessica Dobson (1-1) took the loss for Indiana, giving up five runs (four earned), on four hits and one walk. Wright came in and threw the three pitches before Sara Olson was brought in. Olson tossed the final 5.2 innings and gave up two runs (one earned) on four hits, three walks and one strikeout.

Indiana will be back in action at the DeMarini Invitational hosted by Cal State Fullerton on Saturday at 12:00 p.m. ET/9:00 a.m. PT against UC Davis.
