Hoosiers Battle All The Way To The End, Fall To UC Davis
March 7, 2010
FULLERTON, Calif. - Junior Sara Olson and sophomore Samantha Berenter both drove in runs for the Hoosiers (5-9), but UC Davis scored two in the third and fourth innings and defeated Indiana by a score of 4-2.
In the bottom of third inning, the Aggies (7-9) scored a run on a wild pitch and a two-out single by Rachel Miller to take a 2-0 lead.
The Hoosiers came back in the top of fourth inning and had a chance to erase the deficit. Olson reached on an infield single and Jennifer Glueckert followed with a single. After a strikeout, Amanda Wagner was brought in to pinch hit and reached first on a fielding error in right field on an easy fly ball. Berenter stepped in the box next and fought off a number of pitches before lining one down the right field line that landed just inside the line to drive in a run. Indiana was unable to come up with another two-out hit, so the score remained 2-1.
The Aggies got a leadoff single followed by a pair of one-out singles to start the inning. Jessica Gonzales singled to right field to score one run, but Kelsey Stander's throw to the plate was well ahead of the next runner trying to score. In the ensuing rundown, IU catcher Cassie Gogreve made an errant throw to third base, which allowed a second run to score and UC Davis went to the fifth inning with a 4-1 lead.
With the Hoosiers down to their final three outs, the top of the order went to work on the comeback trail. Kelli Ritchison reached on a throwing error just ahead of Olson. The junior from Orland Park, Ill., lifted a deep fly ball to right field that was misplayed into a triple, the first of her career, and the UC Davis lead was just 4-2. But that would be as close as the Hoosiers would get, as the Aggies closed it out for the win.
Freshman Jessica Dobson (1-2) took the loss in the circle, allowing two runs on five hits and fanning two. Olson came on in relieve and gave up two runs (one earned) on five hits and one strikeout.
Alex Holmes (5-3) logged the win for UC Davis, surrendering seven hits, two unearned runs and striking out 11.
Indiana left nine runners on base in the game and were unable to take full advantage of four errors by the Aggies in the field.
