Indiana Gets First Win at DeMarini Invitational Over Host Cal State Fullerton
March 7, 2010
FULLERTON, Calif. - Five different Hoosiers collected at least two hits and Sara Olson allowed just one run on five hits in seven innings as Indiana came away with a 4-1 victory over Cal State Fullerton (3-15) on Saturday. It was the fourth of five games for the Hoosiers (6-9) at the DeMarini Invitational, hosted by Cal State Fullerton.
For Olson, it was her second complete game victory of the season and the 20th complete game of her career. It is also the third consecutive start in which she has allowed two runs or fewer.
At the plate, Breanna Saucedo collected her second three-hit game of the season while Amanda Wagner, Cassie Gogreve, Kelsey Stander and Samantha Berenter all had two hits apiece as IU matched their season-high with 12 hits in the game. The last time they had 12 hits was Feb. 28, at the Southern Miss Invitational against Belmont.
The Titans got on the board first in the bottom of the third inning when starting pitcher Ari Cervantes helped her own cause with a solo home run, her first of the season.
After leaving five runners on base over the first four innings, the Hoosiers finally broke through in the top of the fifth inning. Stander ledoff with a single to second base and Saucedo followed with a perfect bunt single in front of the plate. Samantha Heyman reached on fielder's choice to load the bases when the Titans attempted to make a play on the lead runner but were unsuccessful. Wagner stepped in and delivered a solid single to left field to score two runs and give Indiana a 2-1 lead. The next three batters would be retired in order and the IU lead stayed at one.
In the sixth inning, the Indiana offense was right back at it thanks to a leadoff double off the bat of Samantha Berenter. A sacrifice bunt by Maria Gillis moved her into scoring position and she moved to third on a infield single from Stander. Saucedo's third hit of the game plated the third run for the Hoosiers and IU lead 3-1.
Olson retired the Titans in order in the bottom of the sixth to keep the momentum on the Indiana side. Gogreve lined a single to center with one out and came around to score when Berenter laced a double, the sixth of the year, all the way to the wall in right center field to make the score 4-1.
Olson improved to 3-4 on the season with the win while Cervantes fell to 1-5 for the Titans.
