Indiana Hangs Tough With No. 10 Stanford in 4-0 Loss
March 7, 2010
FULLERTON, Calif. - The Stanford Cardinal came into the game ranked No. 10 in the country and put up three runs in the first inning, but Indiana buckled down and played the Cardinal even the rest of the way in a 4-0 loss. The game was the final one for the Hoosiers at the DeMarini Invitational on the campus of Cal State Fullerton.
After the Cardinal (15-3) got three in the first, Indiana had a chance to get one back in their half of the first when Samantha Heyman reached on an error and moved up to second when the throw got away down the right field line. But Stanford starting pitcher Teagan Gerhart retired the next two IU batters to keep the Hoosiers (6-10) off the scoreboard.
Monica Wright (2-2) started the game for Indiana and pitched through the first inning. She came out to start the second inning but was replaced by Sara Olson after throwing two pitches to the first batter. Olson retired the next three in order and was on cruise control from there.
Kelsey Stander reached on the first base hit of the game for Indiana in the third inning, a bunt single back to the circle. However, she was thrown out trying to steal second base and the rally ended there.
In the fifth, Olson hit Alissa Haber with a pitch and Ashley Hansen followed with her second RBI double of the game to make it 4-0.
The Hoosiers mouned their final rally of the game in the sixth inning and it started with Stander's second bunt single of the game. She stole second with one out, her fifth of the season, and advanced to third on a groundout. Amanda Wagner hit a slow ground ball up the middle that was snagged by Haber and flipped to first in time to end the threat.
Wright allowed three runs (two earned) on two hits in one inning of work and took the loss. Olson gave up just one run on three hits over the final six innings to keep Indiana close.
Teagan Gerhart (9-2) picked up the win for Stanford, going the distance for the seventh time this season. She gave up four hits and struck out five.
Indiana will be back in action next weekend at the USF Under Armour Showcase in Clearwater, Fla. Teams they will play in the Sunshine State include Boston University, Jacksonville State, Saint Joseph's, Cleveland State and Maine.
