Kennesaw State Holds Onto Early Lead In 3-1 Win Over Indiana
March 8, 2008
CLEARWATER, Fla. - The Kennesaw State Owls led 3-0 after the first three Innings and were able to keep the Indiana Hoosiers at bay over the final three innings, despite a couple scoring chances in the stretch. Junior shortstop Emily Bergeson continued her torrid hitting, picking up two more doubles, while Jennilee Huddleston drove in the only IU run with a sacrifice fly.
The Owls (18-5) broke into the scoring column in the bottom of the first on an RBI single by Kelsey Kulk to take a 1-0 lead. Indiana starting pitcher Jennifer Moore then allowed the first two Owl batters to reach with hits in the bottom of the second inning and Kennesaw State was setup for a big inning. But Moore had other ideas, as she induced a foul popout, a called third strike and a flyout to right field to keep the Owls off the scoreboard.
In the third, Kennesaw State got a leadoff home run from Amanda Malcom and added another later in the inning on a sacrifice fly to push its lead to 3-0.
The Hoosiers (3-10) got their first hit of the game on a double to left center by Bergeson in the fourth inning and would begin their attack two innings later. Jennifer Glueckert led off with a ball back up the middle. The Kennesaw State second baseman ranged to her right and fielded it cleanly, but Glueckert's speed forced a throw that could not be handled by the first baseman and Indiana had the leadoff batter on.
The next batter, Julia Hamilton, blooped a double down the left field line that advanced Glueckert to third base with no outs. From here, the Hoosiers had a couple breaks go against them that brought the inning to a close with just one run crossing the plate.
Brittany Devitt followed Hamilton with a hard shot off the third baseman's glove that trickled away towards the shortstop. Glueckert tried to score on the play but the shortstop was alert and picked up the ball and threw home for the first out of the inning and leaving the Hoosiers with runners on first and third.
The inning continued with Jennilee Huddleston sent a fly ball down the right field line that drifted into foul territory. The Kennesaw State right fielder caught it for the second out and fired home to try to get Hamilton, who was tagging on the play. Hamilton easily made it home and the throw came all the way to the plate and bounced away from the catcher. Devitt then tried to make it to second base but was thrown out there for the final out of the inning, but IU did cut the lead to 3-1.
In the seventh inning, the hot-hitting Bergeson collected her third double of the day to left center to set the table but could only advance to third before the side was retired to end the game. The double by Bergeson was her third in her last four at-bats, dating back to the game against Syracuse earlier in the day.
Moore (1-2) suffered the loss for the Hoosiers, giving up three runs on five hits with a couple of those being helped by the gusty winds. Monica Wright continued to pitch well for the Hoosiers in Florida, throwing three scoreless innings and allowing just one hit.
Angela Lopez (3-3) earned the win for Kennesaw State by allowing one unearned run on two hits and five strikeouts. Brittany Matthews pitched the final 2.0 innings for her second save of the season.
Indiana will conclude play at the Under Armour Invitational on Sunday with an 11 a.m. game against Fairfield.
