Hoosiers Rout The Shockers, 11-0 in Five Innings
March 9, 2012
NORMAN, Okla. - In the first game of the Oklahoma Fall Festival it was the Indiana (10-10) bats that were in the festive mood as they took care of the Wichita State Shockers, 11-0, in five innings. The Hoosiers collected 12 hits in the contest while sophomore Meaghan Murphy held the Shockers to just three hits to pick up the victory in the circle.
Nine different players had at least one hit in the game and three players had two hits. Heather Nelson drove in three runs with her two hits while Samantha Berenter scored a pair of runs to go with her two hits. Breanna Saucedo also had two hits and a run scored.
The three RBI for Nelson matches her career high, which also came last year in Oklahoma against UAPB.
For Murphy (4-4), she has now thrown 10 innings at Haynes Field and has yet to allow a run as she picked up a five inning shutout win last year against Arkansas - Pine Bluff. This time she only surrendered three hits and struck out three on her win to the victory.
Indiana jumped out in front of Wichita State (6-12) in the bottom of the first inning, scoring four runs with two outs. Saucedo started things with a single and moved to second on the sac bunt by Kelsey Brannon. Amanda Wagner drew a two out walk and Saucedo stole third to put runners at the corners for Cassie Gogreve. The fifth year senior catcher laced a single to plate the first run and then Berenter followed with a double to plate Wagner to make it 2-0. Then with a couple of runners in scoring position, Shannon Cawley's single plated two more to make it a 4-0 IU lead.
In the bottom of the fourth inning, the Hoosiers went back to work and put the game out of reach with seven runs. Samantha Heyman drew a leadoff walk and moved to second on a sac bunt by Saucedo and came around to score on Kelsey Brannon's RBI single to center field. A Brianna Meyer double drove in Brannon to make it 6-0. Meyer would cross the plate later on a WSU error before Nelson stepped in with the bases loaded and promptly laced a triple to center field to clear the bases and make it 10-0. Heyman stepped in again and singled to center to drive in Nelson for the 11th run of the game.
Indiana will play No. 8 Oklahoma later today in their second game of the day.
