Walks Too Much For Hoosiers To Overcome Against Ball State
March 11, 2008
TAMPA, Fla. - The Indiana softball team opened its second tournament in the state of Florida at the USF Spring Break Tournament against the Ball State University Cardinals. The Cardinals scored two runs in the second and fifth innings on their way to a 4-2 win over the Hoosiers.
Indiana (4-11) out-hit the Cardinals, 6-3, but the Hoosier pitching staff issued 10 walks and Ball State capitalized enough of them to get the win. Freshman pitcher Sara Olson (2-2) worked out of a couple of jams in her 4.1 innings of work but allowed four runs on two hits and eight walks in suffering her second loss of the season. Jennifer Moore pitched the final 2.2 innings and allowed just one hit and two walks to go along with one strikeout.
The Hoosiers got a one-out double from Brittany Devitt and moved her over to third on a groundout in the first but could not come up with the two-out hit to take the early lead. Ball State responded with two runs in the top of the second on a bases loaded groundout and a wild pitch to take a 2-0 lead.
Indiana got a Stephanie Pellerito leadoff double to start the third inning and Kelli Ritchison came in to pinch-run for her. Ritchison moved to third on a single up the middle by Jennifer Glueckert and came in to score on a sacrifice fly by Emily Bergeson to trim the lead to 2-1 for the Cardinals.
Ball State took a 4-1 lead in the top of the fifth on two bases loaded walks, one by Olson and one by Moore.
Senior third baseman Jennilee Huddleson laced a triple over the left fielder's head with one out in the sixth inning to get the IU rally going, her second triple of the season. Brittany Stein followed with an RBI single, her first RBI as a Hoosier, to bring Indiana to within 4-2, but the Indiana rally ended there.
Indiana will have one game off before returning to the field to take on the host, USF Bulls at approximately 5 p.m. at the USF Softball Field.
