BYU Pushes Past Indiana, 6-0
March 13, 2009
CLEARWATER, Fla. - Sophomore catcher Brittany Stein continued her hot hitting in the second game on Friday, pounding out two hits, but it was the BYU Cougars that scored four runs on their way to a 6-0 win over the Hoosiers at the USF Under Amour Showcase in Clearwater, Fla.
The Cougars (15-12) score dodged bullet from Indiana in the top of the first, escaping a two on, no out jam by getting a double play. Then in the bottom of the inning, BYU scored four runs with the big blow coming off the bat of Andrea Ramirez in the form of a three-run home run to right field.
In the bottom of the second inning, Monica Wright (0-5) worked herself into a bases loaded no out jam before being relieved by senior Ashley Hobbs. Hobbs, the Evansville native promptly induced a pair of ground balls to the corners of the infield that resulted in force outs at home plate. Then she slammed the door on the rally by getting the cleanup batter for BYU to groundout to shortstop for the final out of the inning and keeping the score 4-0 in favor of the Cougars.
Hobbs would go on to pitch the final five innings, allowing two runs on two hits with three strikeouts and one walk.
Leading the Indiana offense was Sara Olson with two hits while Heather Nelson, Kelli Ritchison and Emily Bergeson, the top three hitters in the IU lineup, each picked up base hits, along with Jennifer Glueckert. Brittany Stein also had a hit, giving her a team-best .389 batting average over the past seven games.
Christie (7-6) went the distance in the circle for BYU by scattering seven hits over seven innings and striking out seven on her way to the win.
The Hoosiers will be back in action at 1 p.m. on Saturday against Hofstra followed by a 4 p.m. meeting with Ball State.
