Wright Ties Career-High With Eight K's In Loss to Florida International
March 14, 2008
CLEARWATER, Fla. - The Indiana softball team was able to keep the high-powered offense of Florida International University in check most of the rain-soaked game, but the Panthers got key hits in a pair of innings on their way to a 5-0 win at the Under Armour Showcase in Clearwater, Fla.
The Panthers (13-18) opened the second inning with a single and a fielder's choice to put runners at first and second with no outs against Indiana (4-15) starting pitcher Monica Wright. A double and a single later, FIU had a 2-0 lead over the Hoosiers.
Indiana responded in the second inning with a one-out double from Brittany Devitt followed by a walk handed out to Tory Yamaguchi and Stephanie Pellerito reached on a FIU error to load the bases. But a ground ball back up the middle was snared by pitcher Jessica Landau, who started the 1-2-3 double play to get out of the inning.
Wright would keep the Panther bats quiet over the next three innings before a leadoff walk in the sixth would come back to haunt her. It was followed by a single to left center and a double into right field that plated two runs to increase the lead to 4-0. FIU manufactured its fifth run in the top of the seventh to produce the final score, 5-0.
Although Wright's (1-6) final line won't tell the story about how well she pitched on Friday in suffering the loss. She threw her third complete game of the season and tied her career high with eight strikeouts while allowing five runs on eight hits. The last time she had eight strikeouts came on March 8, 2007 against Massachusetts.
The Hoosiers will return to the field against Rutgers at 4 p.m. on Friday afternoon.
