Hoosiers Lose To Boston University, 6-2
March 14, 2010
CLEARWATER, Fla. - Freshman infielder Maria Gillis picked up her first career hit, an RBI single, and later added her second hit of the game but Boston University scored two runs in the third inning and three in the fourth to pull away and defeat Indiana, 6-2.
Redshirt senior Monica Wright started in the circle for Indiana (6-14) and was strong at the start. She allowed just one hit through the first three innings before allowing a two-run home run in the fourth inning. She worked her way through that inning before being replaced by Sara Olson after one batter in the fifth.
Boston (7-9) went on to add three more runs in the top of fifth inning off Olson and took a 5-0 lead into the bottom of the fifth. But the Hoosiers mounted a charge in their half, started by a one-out triple by Jennifer Glueckert, the first of the season for the junior. Gillis wasted little time bringing her home with a solid single up the middle for her first career hit and RBI.
The Terriers got that run back in the top of sixth inning, but Indiana went back on the offensive in the bottom of the frame. Freshman Amanda Wagner lifted a triple to right field, the first of her career, and came in to score when Samantha Berenter poked a single into right field for the RBI, her 11th run batted in of the year.
Olson held the Terriers in check in the seventh and BU starter Cassidi Hardy (5-2) closed out the game in the bottom to get the complete game win.
Wright (2-4) suffered the loss for IU, going four innings and allowing three runs on four hits and three strikeouts. Olson threw three innings of relief and gave up three runs, two earned, on three hits.
Indiana will close out play on Monday at 10:00 a.m. against Long Island University.
