Hoosiers Capitalize On LMU Mistakes in 4-2 Win
March 15, 2009
CLEARWATER, Fla. - The Indiana softball team got a two-run single from senior Stephanie Pellerito that proved to be the difference in the Hoosiers 4-2 win over Loyola Marymount on Sunday in Clearwater, Fla. Sophomre Sara Olson (2-4) picked up the win for Indiana, allowing two runs on six hits in her fourth complete game of the season.
Freshman Samantha Berenter reached base in all three of her plate appearances and Kelli Ritchison continued her strong hitting with another RBI single that actually led to two runs. With runners on second and third, the junior hit a slow ground ball to shortstop and looked to beat the throw, but the throw was too high and got past the first baseman, allowing Kelsey Stander to score easily from second base for the first two runs for the Hoosiers (2-19).
An inning later, Brittany Stein reached on an error to start the inning and was replaced on the base paths by pinch runner Kristin King. Sara Olson, from off a game-winning grand slam the day before, dropped down a perfect bunt down the third base line that hugged the line before coming to a stop in fair territory. Jennifer Glueckert sacrificed the runners into scoring position with a bunt, leaving up to Pellerito, who delivered to give Indiana a 4-0 lead.
LMU (11-19) got back to within two runs after Sam Fisher hit a two-run home run to the opposite field in the bottom of the sixth inning. Then in the seventh inning the Lions put the tying runs on base after back-to-back base hits to start the inning. A sacrifice bunt later, the Lions had the tying runs in scoring position with one out but Olson induced a popout for the second out of the inning. Fisher stepped in with a chance to bring the Lions even with a base hit but Olson hit her in the leg with the first pitch of the at bat to load the bases. Kelly Sarginson, the cleanup hitter in LMU's lineup, was up next but lifted a lazy fly ball to right field for the final out and the third win of the year for Indiana.
Olson logged her second win of the season by throwing all seven innings and giving up two runs on six hits with three strikeouts and one walk. Corie Goodman (6-9) suffered the loss for LMU, going 4.1 innings and surrendering four runs (two earned) on five hits.
