FIU Walk-Off Home Run Dooms Indiana
March 15, 2009
CLEARWATER, Fla. - Brittany Stein hit a two-run single in the sixth inning to give Indiana a 2-1 lead but the Florida International Panthers got a walk off home run from Jenny Welch in the bottom of the seventh to take the win away from the Hoosiers.
In the top of the sixth inning, Kelsey Stander led off the inning with an infield single and then stole second base on the next pitch to get into scoring position for the top of the lineup and freshman Heather Nelson. Nelson got in an early 0-2 hole but worked the count back to full before drawing a walk on the 11th pitch of the at bat. A strikeout and ground out later, the runners were at second and third with two outs for sophomore catcher Brittany Stein. Stein laced the 1-2 pitch into the gap in left center field, allowing both runners to score and give the Hoosiers a 2-1 lead.
Ashley Hobbs (1-5) took the loss for the Hoosiers, going the distance and allowing three runs on eight hits with two strikeouts and four walks. She was able to continue to be effective because she stranded 11 Panthers on the base paths in the game.
