CLEARWATER, Fla. - The Hoosiers had the bases loaded with the winning run at second base with two outs in the seventh but could not get the key hit to complete the comeback and fell to Long Island University, 4-3, in Clearwater, Fla., on Monday. Freshman Breanna Saucedo collected three hits in the game for Indiana (6-15), the third three-hit game of the season.

Freshman pitcher Cassie Loweth (0-3) made her third start of the season in the circle and allowed four runs but three Indiana errors made only one of the Long Island (8-10) runs earned. The complete game was the first of her career, topping her previous high of 4.0 innings pitched against Jacksonville State on Feb. 14.

Long Island opened the scoring in the top of the second inning with a run as a result of an IU error. In the bottom of the second inning, the Hoosiers put two on with two outs thanks to a pair of LIU miscues but could not get the hit needed to drive them in.

In the bottom of the fourth inning, junior Sara Olson drilled a double down the left field line and then moved up to third on a single by junior Cassie Gogreve. But the bottom third of the order was not able to push a run across and LIU hung onto a 1-0 lead.

The Blackbirds pounced on a pair of IU errors in the top of the fifth inning that led to two more unearned runs to bump the lead to 3-0. They would tack on their only earned run of the day with a single and double in the top of the sixth inning.

As they have countless times this season, Indiana did not go down quietly in their last at-bat. Junior Kelsey Stander started the rally with a one-out infield single and was followed by a high chopper up the middle by Saucedo to set the table for the heart of the lineup. Samantha Berenter squeezed a single back up the middle to cut the lead to 4-1 in favor of LIU.

Olson kept the momentum in the Hoosiers' favor with her second double of the day, this one off the base of the wall in right to make it 4-2. Pinch-runner Kelli Ritchison was thrown out at the plate trying to score on the play but the Hoosiers still had two runners in scoring position with two outs.

Gogreve fouled off a number of pitches before finally drawing a walk to load the bases for Jennifer Glueckert. Glueckert had a walk-off single against Oregon earlier this season and the Hoosiers were hoping for a repeat performance in crunch time from the senior. She worked the count to 2-2 before hitting a high chopper to third base that was fielded and thrown home in time for the force out to end the game.
