Northern Iowa Pulls Away Late To Hand Hoosiers 5-1 Defeat
March 15, 2011
TULSA, Okla. - Cassie Gogreve drilled a solo home run in the second inning to give the Hoosiers the early lead but Northern Iowa scored five unanswered runs to hand the Hoosiers a 5-1 defeat at the Hardesty Sports Complex located on the campus of the University of Tulsa.
Morgan Melloh (8-11) took the loss for the Hoosiers despite registering 13 strikeouts to up her career total to 1,300 and remain in 17th on the NCAA career strikeout list. It is also the 62nd time in her career that Melloh has registered 10-plus strikeouts in a game.
Gogreve slammed a home run to left field to give the Hoosiers a 1-0 lead on her sixth career long ball. But the Indiana bats were not able to string together enough hits over the course of the game to push across any more runs. Breanna Saucedo, batting out of the leadoff spot for the Hoosiers, registered a pair of hits for the 27th time in her career.
Northern Iowa (13-9) took the lead on two runs in the fifth inning and then added three more in the top of the seventh inning.
UNI's Jamie Fisher (7-3) pitched all seven innings to get the win for the Panthers, giving up one run on five hits and posting four strikeouts.
The Hoosiers will take on Tulsa at 6 p.m. ET at the Hardesty Complex on Tuesday evening.
