Hoosiers Drop Spring Break Finale to Radford, 1-0
March 16, 2008
CLEARWATER, Fla. - The Hoosiers were only able to muster three hits against Radford's Ashley Taylor in a 1-0 loss to the Radford Highlanders on Sunday morning. The game was the final game for the Hoosiers in the Under Armour Showcase in Clearwater, Fla., and also brings their spring break trip to a close.
Freshman pitcher Sara Olson was solid in the circle once again for the Hoosiers. She gave up just one hit and struckout two while walking one in three-plus innings of work. She was forced to leave the game due to injury after throwing two pitches to the first batter of the fourth inning.
Jennifer Moore (1-3) was brought in to take over and gave up a double to the first batter. After sacrifice bunt moved the runner to third, a sacrifice fly by Highlander catcher Sarah Himan gave Radford a 1-0 lead.
The Highlanders (16-7) threatened again in the top of the fifth after a leadoff double put a runner in scoring position. But the next batter popped up a sacrifice bunt attempt to Hoosier third baseman Jennilee Huddleston to keep the runner at second. Ashley Taylor hit a rocket to the left side of the infield that was stopped by a diving Emily Bergeson. Bergeson tried to get the runner advancing to third but her throw was not in time and there were runners at the corners with one out. The Highlanders then attempted a double steal, but the Hoosiers were ready for it, as catcher Brittany Stein quickly threw down to second and where Bergeson was waiting to take out Taylor before the runner from third could advance. The next batter grounded out to second to end the threat and keep it a one-run advantage for Radford.
Monica Wright came on to start the sixth inning and did not allow a hit over the final two innings to keep the Radford lead to just one.
The Hoosiers got a two-out hit from Pellerito in the bottom of the seventh but catcher Brittany Stein grounded out to end the game.
The home opener is next for Indiana when they welcome Drake University to the IU Softball Field on Thursday at 4 p.m. The Hoosiers will then host the IU Classic on Saturday and Sunday when Louisville and the University of Illinois-Chicago come to Bloomington.
