Another Late-Inning Rally Results In A Hoosiers Win
March 16, 2012
BLOOMINGTON, Ind. - For the second time on Friday, the Indiana Hoosiers (13-13) used a late inning rally to erase a deficit and pull out a 5-3 win as part of the Hoosier Classic at the IU Softball Field. Breanna Saucedo had two hits and Jenna Abraham clubbed her fifth home run of the season.
Freshman Lora Olson (8-8) tossed her seventh complete game of the season, allowing three runs on five hits with three walks and three strikeouts to get the win.
Saucedo started things in the first inning with a double down the left field line and she moved to third on a bunt single by Brianna Meyer. Saucedo would come in to score on a sac fly by Jenna Abraham, her 10th RBI of the year to give Indiana the early 1-0 lead.
The Chippewas (9-10) pushed across three runs in the third inning to take a 3-1 lead.
In the fourth inning, Samantha Berenter laced a one-out double to right field before Amanda Wagner reached on a CMU error that allowed Berenter to score from second base to cut the Central Michigan lead to 3-2.
When Olson retired the Chippewas in order in the top of the sixth, the Hoosiers went to work in their half of the inning starting with a leadoff home run by Abraham. Cassie Gogreve followed with a single up the middle and Samantha Berenter drew a walk to put two on for Amanda Wagner. The junior reached on an error to load the bases for Lindsay Callanan, who singled through the left side to plate a run to make it 4-3. Then with one out, Kelsey Brannon lifted a fly ball to right field that was deep enough to allow Berenter to tag and score from third base for an insurance run and a 5-3 lead.
In the seventh inning, Olson mowed down the Chippewas in order to preserve the win.
The Hoosiers will continue play at the Hoosier Classic on Saturday at 4:45 p.m. ET against Wright State. The first game of the day will begin at 10:00 a.m. ET at the IU Softball Field and admission is free to all games.
