Berenter's RBI Double Propels Hoosiers to 1-0 Win
March 18, 2011
BLOOMINGTON, Ind. - Junior infielder Samantha Berenter laced a RBI double to the left center gap to push home the only run of the game and Morgan Melloh made it stand as Indiana opened the Hoosier Classic with a 1-0 win over Central Michigan at the IU Softball Field.
Melloh (9-11) went the distance in the circle and gave up just two hits in the game while walking four and striking out 10 to earn the 99th win of her career. The 10 strikeouts is also the 63rd time she has reached double figures in strikeouts in a game in her career. With those 10 strikeouts, Melloh now has 1314 in her career to move into 16th place on the NCAA Career strikeouts list.
Indiana had only three hits in the contest but Berenter made hers count, as she blasted the two-strike offering from CMU's Kara Dornbos (4-3) into the left center gap to allow pinch runner Kelsey Brannon to score easily from second base. Brannon came on to run for Cassie Gogreve who drew a walk and was then sacrificed to second on a perfectly placed bunt by Meaghan Murphy.
The 1-0 win is the second time this season the Hoosiers have won a game by that score and they are now 3-3 in games decided by one run. Indiana also improves to 13-2 this year when collecting more hits in a game than its opponents.
The Hoosiers were also supposed to play Wright State at 4:45 p.m. on Friday but rain in the Bloomington area forced the cancellation of that contest and it will not be made up. For a complete schedule of the Hoosier Classic go to the Tournament Central page.
