Olson Beats The Darkness, Eastern Michigan With RBI Double
March 19, 2011
BLOOMINGTON, Ind. - Senior utility player Sara Olson added to her team-leading RBI total with a double to center field to plate Ashley Warrum from first base in the bottom of the fifth inning to allow Indiana to escape with a 1-0 win against Eastern Michigan. Morgan Melloh tossed her second one-hitter of the day to pick up the win for the Hoosiers.
Indiana (15-12) has now won three games in a row for the first time since the 2007 season. In addition, all three wins have come via shutout to mark the first time IU has shutout three straight opponents since the 2006 season.
With changes in the tournament schedule forcing the Hoosiers and Eagles to start the game knowing that darkness would come into play later, Olson waited until the last possible second before delivering like a senior should. Ashley Warrum was on first base following her single through the right side and was quickly put in motion when Olson drilled the Jaclyn Caro pitch deep to center field. Warrum scored easily and Olson was thrown out trying to go to third base on the throw to the plate but the damage had been done.
When the Hoosiers were done batting in the fifth, the coaches for both teams and the umpires met to discuss how to handle the impending onset of darkness as the sun began to set quickly. The teams decided that the sixth inning would be the last inning and the seventh inning would not be played, meaning Indiana was three outs away from a win.
Melloh hurried back out to the circle and promptly retired the Eastern Michigan 9-1-2 hitters for her 11th win of the year. She had 10 strikeouts in the game to go with one hit and one walk allowed. Caro took the loss by allowing one run on seven hits and three walks in her first appearance of the year.
After a leadoff single by Jessica Richards, Melloh allowed just two EMU batters to reach base the rest of the game.
Shelby Gogreve posted her second two-hit game of the day with a pair of singles while Olson and Warrum both finished with two hits apiece.
The Hoosiers will play Central Michigan on Sunday at 1:00 p.m. at Twin Lakes Sports Park and then host Wright State at 4:45 p.m. ET at the IU Softball Field. For a complete schedule of the Hoosier Classic go to Tournament Central page.
