Indiana Falls to SIU Edwardsville in IU Classic Opener

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. - In their first game of the season at home, the Indiana Hoosiers lost to Southern Illinois University Edwardsville by a score of 11-0 in five innings. The Cougars' starting pitcher Erika Taylor went the distance in the circle and did not allow a base hit to the Hoosiers (6-16).
Taylor (13-8) did not allow a hit, walked three and struck out three to get the win for SIU (15-13).
Junior Sara Olson (3-7) started in the circle for Indiana and pitched the first 2.2 innings, allowing seven runs but only two were earned, on four hits. Senior Monica Wright pitch one-third of an inning and walked a batter before freshman Cassie Loweth surrendered four runs, three earned, on three hits in one inning of work. Freshman Jessica Dobson pitched the final inning and walked two and struck out one and did not allow a run.
Olson drew the first of her two walks in the game in the second inning was was erased on a fielder's choice. SIUE scored a pair of runs on an unlucky bounce on a ground ball to shortstop on the top of the third inning. After an error prolonged the inning, the Cougars pounced on the Hoosiers for five more unearned runs in the inning to jump out to a 7-0 lead.
In the bottom of the third, Jennifer Glueckert drew a two-out walk and moved up to second base on a passed ball, the farthest an IU base runner would advance on the day. Olson then drew her second walk in the fourth inning but was stranded at first base one batter later.
The Cougars added two runs in the fourth and fifth innings for the final score.
