Chippewas Steal Win From Hoosiers Late
March 20, 2010
BLOOMINGTON, Ind. - Indiana (6-17) took a one-run lead to the bottom of the sixth inning against Central Michigan (9-7) at the IU Classic on Saturday, but the Chippewas scored two runs in the inning and held on to hand the Hoosiers a 3-2 loss. Senior Jennifer Glueckert had her second three-hit game of the season and freshman Maria Gillis drove in her second run of the year with a sacrifice fly.
Redshirt senior Monica Wright (2-5) had the Central Michigan bats under control through the first five innings, allowing one run on three hits. But three straight singles in the bottom of the sixth inning knocked her out of the game, as junior Sara Olson came on in relief. Pinch-hitter Ashley Gilson dribbled a grounder through the right side of the infield to plate the tying and go-ahead run.
In the top of the seventh, Glueckert drilled a double all the way to the wall in left field with one out, her fourth double of the season. Freshman Samantha Heyman was brought in as a pinch runner with freshman Breanna Saucedo at the plate. Saucedo hit a ground ball to CMU Molly Coldren, who tagged Heyman out trying to advance to third for the second out of the inning. Sophomore Samantha Berenter popped out on a shallow drive to left field for the final out of the game.
The Hoosiers got on the board in the top of the first inning, thanks to a little help from the CMU defense. Glueckert singled off Chippewas' starting pitcher Kara Dornbos and Saucedo followed with a single to center field. A Dornbos wild pitch moved both runners into scoring position for the heart of the IU order. However, sophomore Samantha Berenter grounded out sharply to short and freshman Amanda Wagner popped out in foul territory to leave it up to junior Sara Olson with two outs. Olson hit a hard ground ball just to the left of Coldren at short and she bobbled it to allow a run to score to make it 1-0 in favor of the Hoosiers.
In the top of the fourth, Wagner started with a single back up the middle and moved to second on a sacrifice bunt by Olson. Junior Cassie Gogreve singled sharply to center field and Wagner had to hold at third base. Freshman Maria Gillis then lifted a soft fly ball to right field that was deep enough for Wagner to score to make it a 2-0 lead.
Wright's final line showed 5.1 innings pitched, six hits allowed and three runs, but only two were earned. Olson recorded the final two outs in the sixth inning and did give up one hit.
Dornbos (4-2) went the distance and gave up two runs, one earned, on eight hits and four strikeouts.
Due to the rain in the forecast, Sunday's game has been moved to a 10:00 a.m. start at the IU Softball Field between the Hoosiers and Chippewas.
