Indiana Bats Pound Out 12 Hits in Win Over Wright State
March 20, 2011
BLOOMINGTON, Ind. - Indiana junior outfielder Lindsay Callanan had three hits and scored three runs and freshman Ashley Warrum drove in two runs in support of Morgan Melloh in the Hoosiers 6-3 win over Wright State as part of the Hoosier Classic. Melloh logged the win in all four games and allowed just eight hits in those games.
"It was great to be able to play so well this weekend and get four wins," Indiana head coach Michelle Gardner said. "We needed to gain some momentum as we get ready for the start of the Big Ten season and I think we were able to accomplish that."
The win improves the Hoosiers to 16-12 on the year, the first time IU has been four games over since March 23, 2007. The 16 victories is also the most in a season since the 2008 season (16-35).
Melloh (12-11) pitched five innings and gave up two runs on four hits and five strikeouts to earn the win. Jessica Dobson came on in relief and gave up just one hit - a solo home run - in two innings.
Indiana started quickly in the first inning when Breanna Saucedo drew a four-pitch walk to start the bottom of the first. Callanan followed with a single to right field that skipped under the glove of the Wright State outfielder and all the way to allow Callanan to circle the bases and give IU a 2-0 lead.
In the second inning, Ashley Warrum drove in the first of her two runs with a RBI single to left field to plate Callanan from second after she singled and stole second.
The Hoosiers did not get on the board in the third inning but the fourth inning saw another crooked number put on the board. Once again it was Callanan starting the rally with a double to left and she crossed the plate when Warrum laced a triple to left to make it a 4-0 Indiana lead. A single to left by Sara Olson added another run to the board and the scoring was capped off by an infield RBI single by Heather Nelson.
Wright State added two runs on a double in the fifth inning and one more run on a solo home run in the top of the seventh inning.
Indiana will host Butler University for a doubleheader on Tuesday starting at 2 p.m. at the IU Softball Field. The game was originally scheduled to be broadcast on BigTenNetwork.com but some technical issues have forced that broadcast to be cancelled. Fans can still listen to all the action with Dave Leno and Nathan Wiechers by clicking the Live Broadcast at the top of the softball page.
