Richards, Huddleston Power Hoosiers to 3-1 Win Over Eastern Michigan
March 23, 2007
BLOOMINGTON, Ind. - Senior Kim Richards hit a monster two-run home run and junior Jennilee Huddleston added a solo shot to send Indiana to a 3-1 win over Eastern Michigan at the IU Classic on Friday, March 23.
After sophomore Emily Bergeson singled to left center to lead off the second inning, Richards crushed the first pitch she saw well over the scoreboard in left center to stake Indiana (15-11) to an early 2-0 lead. The home run was Richards' fourth of the season, all of which have come in the last 12 days.
Huddleston extended her career high with her fifth bomb of the season, this one over the fence in left to lead off the sixth inning. Huddleston's home run also came on the first pitch of her at-bat.
The Hoosiers picked up just three other hits in the contest, getting a first-inning single from junior Julia Hamilton, a third-inning double from Huddleston and a fifth-inning bunt single from freshman Jennifer Glueckert.
The Eagles (4-13) managed just a seventh-inning run, stranding 11 runners despite eight hits. Eastern Michigan had at least a pair of baserunners in each inning but the second and sixth, and left the bases loaded in the fourth.
Down 3-0 entering the top of the seventh, EMU made things interesting. Lauren Clark singled up the middle to lead the inning off, but was erased on Stephanie Sabo's fielder's choice. A groundout moved Sabo to second, and Lindsay Schmid walked to put runners on first and second. Jenny Scherer then followed with a double to left off Hamilton's glove to score Sabo. Now faced with runners and second and third and nursing a two-run lead, IU reliever Monica Wright got a grounder to first to secure the win.
Wright (11-7) picked up the win, allowing one run on three hits and two walks in 3 1/3 innings of work. The Morrison, Ill., sophomore came into the game with bases loaded in the top of the fourth and promptly induced a groundout to keep the Eagles off the scoreboard. IU starter Jennifer Moore earned a no-decision, allowing no runs on five hits and two walks in 3 2/3 innings of work.
Aimee Woodrum (2-4) took the loss for Eastern Michigan, surrendering three runs on six hits in 6 innings.
Huddleston paced the Hoosiers at the plate with a 2-for-3 effort, while Clark (2-for-4), Sabo (2-for-4, run) and Scherer (2-for-4, RBI) had two hits each to lead the Eagles.
Indiana has now won 12 of its last 14 games after a 3-9 start to the season.
The Hoosiers return to action on Saturday, March 24, at 2 p.m. against Buffalo. The game was originally scheduled for noon, but rain in the Bloomington area forced Friday's fourth game of the IU Classic to be postponed until Saturday morning and caused the remaining games to be shifted to different times.
