COLUMBUS, Ohio —The Indiana softball team fell 8-2 in its series finale with Ohio State this evening to drop to 16-16 on the year and 1-2 in Big Ten play.

Meaghan Murphy falls to 9-9 on the season with the loss after giving up five runs on three hits in 1.1 innings. Lora Olson threw an inning before handing over duties to Brooke Boetjer. Boetjer closed the final 3.2 innings and gave up three runs on six hits while striking out two.

After connecting on 11 hits in the first game this afternoon, the Hoosiers registered just three hits in this contest. Shannon Cawley and Lexi Reese each singled, while Amanda Wagner doubled on a 1-for-2 day and stretched her hit-streak to nine games.

The Buckeyes jumped on the board early with a solo homerun in the first inning from Taylor Watkins, and a three-hit second inning combined with an IU error allowed four more runs to score for Ohio State.

Indiana cut its deficit in half thanks to a pair of OSU miscues in the fourth. Wagner kick-started that inning with a one-out double to left. After Cawley walked, Murphy put a routine ground ball in play, but OSU’s Megan Coletta let it go between her legs to load the bases for the Hoosiers. Lexi Reese hit into a fielder’s choice as Ohio State opted to get the runner at third for the second out of the inning, but the throw was bobbled and the ball rolled along the fence, allowing both Wagner and Cawley to come in and score.

A double from Ohio State’s Leesa Gresham plated two for the Buckeyes in the fourth and an RBI-single from Cami Prantl in the sixth pushed their lead to 8-2 through six.

Indiana needed to scrape together six runs to tie it in the seventh, but the Hoosiers failed to push a run across, dropping the series finale, 8-2.

Indiana will return to action next weekend for a three-game series at Michigan State. First pitch of the first game is slated for 4 p.m. EST.
