EAST LANSING, Mich. – Despite tallying a run in all by two innings this afternoon, the Indiana softball team lost its second straight contest to host Michigan State this afternoon, 10-7, to fall to 1-4 in Big Ten conference play and 16-18 on the year.

The Hoosiers managed to plate seven runs on 11 hits, but the Indiana pitching staff gave up a combined 15 hits to help the Spartans to 10 runs.

Lora Olson was given the start, but was replaced by Brooke Boejer (1-2) after giving up four runs in 1.1 innings. Boetjer would take the loss on 3.0 innings of work, allowing five runs on six hits, before Meaghan Murphy closed out the remaining 1.2 innings of the contest.

Shannon Cawley had a 3-for-5 day at the plate and scored once while driving in a pair to lead the Hoosiers’ offense. Amanda Wagner provided a pair of hits and two RBI, while Shelby Gogreve and Kassi Farmer each went 2-for-4 on the day.

The Hoosiers wasted no time to strike as they scored twice in the opening at bat of the game. Brianna Meyer reached on a leadoff single and was ruled safe at second on an errant throw on Gogreve’s sacrifice bunt attempt.  Wagner and Cawley followed with back-to-back singles to bring in two runs and put Indiana ahead, 2-0.

An RBI-single by MSU’s Jayme O’Bryant would score one for the Spartans in the bottom of the first, but Indiana fired back with a run of their own in the top half of the second inning. Jenna Abraham connected on a one-out single and eventually found herself standing on third after consecutive base hits from Meyer and Gogreve. With bases loaded and one out, Wagner battled back from a 1-2 count and coaxed a walk to put IU back up by two.

A pair of Indiana errors and six MSU hits would give the Spartans their first lead of the ballgame in the bottom of the second. Four consecutive singles by MSU batters tied the game at three runs apiece, and a three-run homerun by O’Bryant put the home team up, 6-3.

Farmer started things off with a single to center field to start off the top of the third. After a walk and a hit batter, Abraham dug in at the plate with bases loaded and one out. The junior put one in play to the shortstop who then fired home to get the force, but MSU’s Ellie Stoffer dropped the throw to help Indiana cut its deficit to two runs.

The Hoosiers knotted the score at six runs with a two-run fourth. Wagner led off the frame with a walk before advancing to second on an illegal pitch by Carly Nielsen. A single from Cawley put runners on the corners for Farmer, who eventually came through with a base knock back up the middle and set the score at 6-5. A Michigan State error in the following play would allow Cawley to score from second base and tie the game.

The Spartans would score four unanswered runs to take a 10-6 lead, leaving the Hoosiers to their final at bat in the top of the seventh. After Abraham walked and Gogreve singled, Cawley hit and RBI-single back up the middle to bring in another run, but that would be as far as the Hoosiers would get as Indiana eventually fell 10-7.

The Hoosiers and Spartans will meet again tomorrow for the final game of the series. First pitch is slated for 1 p.m. EST.
