Hoosiers Home Win Streak Snapped by No. 20 Michigan
March 31, 2012
BLOOMINGTON, Ind. - The Hoosiers scored twice in the bottom of the sixth inning to cut the Michigan (23-9, 4-0 Big Ten) lead to one run but the 20th-ranked Wolverines held Indiana off the board in the seventh inning to hand IU the 3-2 loss at the IU Softball Field. The loss snaps a 15-game home winning streak, the fifth-longest in the country entering the day.
Lora Olson (9-10) took the tough luck loss for Indiana, as she was superb in the circle. She gave up three runs on nine hits and two walks to go with four strikeouts.
Haylie Wagner (16-4) picked up the win for Michigan, give up two runs on seven hits in 5.1 innings. Sara Driesenga logged her second save of the season by pitching the final 1.2 innings and not allowing a base runner.
Michigan scored a single run in the second inning and then added a pair of runs in the top of the fifth inning to take a 3-0 lead.
The Hoosiers started their rally in the bottom of the sixth inning when Cassie Gogreve was hit by a pitch to leadoff the inning. Heather Nelson came in to pinch run and advanced to third base on a single to right field by Samantha Berenter. Berenter took second on the play when UM tried to throw out Nelson advancing to third base unsuccessfully. Shannon Cawley grounded out to second base to allow Nelson to score and Berenter to move to third. Wagner followed by looping a single to center field to trim the Michigan lead to 3-2.
But the IU bats were not able to get a rally going in the seventh inning and saw their 15-game winning streak snapped.
