BLOOMINGTON, Ind. -
After seeing its 15-game home win streak snapped earlier in the day, the Indiana Hoosiers (17-16, 2-3 Big Ten) rebounded with an impressive 7-2 win over No. 20 Michigan (23-10, 4-1 Big Ten) at the IU Softball Field on Saturday.
The win is the first for the Hoosiers against Michigan in Bloomington since April 20, 1996.
Meaghan Murphy (8-6) was phenomenal in the circle for Indiana despite allowing seven hits, as she held the powerful Michigan lineup to two runs on those seven hits with two strikeouts and one walk.
Amanda Wagner completed her perfect day at the plate with two more hits - including her sixth home run of the year - and three RBI while Shannon Cawley continued her stellar freshman season with two hits, an RBI and a run scored. Another freshman, Brianna Meyer, also got into the power surge with her first career home run in the sixth inning.
The Hoosiers took advantage of the erratic Michigan pitching in the third inning, scoring three runs - all on bases loaded walks.
Michigan scored a pair of runs in the top of the fifth inning to cut the Indiana lead to 3-2 but the Hoosier bats were ready to roll in the bottom of the frame. Samantha Berenter singled through the right side and Cawley singled to left center with two outs to set the table for Wagner. The junior crushed a home run to right field off Haylie Wagner, to put IU out in front, 6-2.
Lora Olson came on in relief to start the sixth inning and continued her stellar form from game one to keep the Michigan offense at bay.
The bottom of the sixth saw Brianna Meyer get into a pitch from Hilary Payne and it carried over the fence in left center for an insurance run for the Hoosiers, making it 7-2.
Olson surrendered two hits in the seventh but kept UM off the board to preserve the win for IU.
The Hoosiers will be looking for the series win against the Wolverines on Sunday with the first pitch slated for 1:00 p.m. ET.
