Hoosiers Rally in Seventh To Earn Road Win At Kentucky
April 1, 2008
LEXINGTON, Ky. - Indiana senior third baseman Jennilee Huddleston drilled a two-run double in the top of the seventh to give the Hoosiers a 5-4 win over the Kentucky Wildcats at the UK Softball Complex. Huddleston was one of four Hoosiers to record two hits in the game as Indiana picked up its first road win of the season.
The wild top of the seventh inning got started after Julia Hamilton popped out when Kelli Ritchison reached on a throwing error by Molly Johnson, the Kentucky shortstop. Emily Bergeson coaxed a walk out of UK pitcher Jennifer Young to put runners on first and second with one out. Tory Yamaguchi then lined a pitch to center field that was misjudged by Megan Aull and the ball went off her glove and all the way to the wall to bring the Hoosiers to within one at 4-3 with runners on second and third as Ritchison came around to score. Stephanie Pellerito grounded out to shortstop to bring IU down to their final out. It was then that Huddleston stepped in and gave the Hoosiers the lead with the double to right center.
Monica Wright pitched a perfect bottom of the seventh to get the win for Indiana. It was her fourth inning of work in relief of starting pitcher Sara Olson. In those four innings, Wright gave up two runs, one earned, on three hits with four strikeouts and two walks. Olson was solid in her three innings in the circle, surrendering two runs on four hits with three strikeouts and two walks. She also narrowly missed a home run on her single to right center in the fourth inning when the ball hit the top of the yellow line on the right center field wall. Wright and Olson combined to strand 11 Wildcats on base in the game while IU left eight on the base paths.
Indiana got on the board in the top of the fifth, again with the help of a Kentucky error. Hamilton singled to center field and the ball went through the legs of the center fielder to allow Hamilton to end up on third base. Ritchison followed with a single to left field to drive in her first career run and cut the UK lead to 4-1.
Kentucky stranded five runners on base the first two innings against Olson but were able to plate a run in each inning to take the early 2-0 lead.
Joining Huddleston with two hits in the game were Hamilton, Ritchison and Bergeson. Indiana was also 5-for-11 with two outs in the game.
The Hoosiers will play the second game of the doubleheader with the Wildcats at approximately 6:30 p.m.
