No. 3 Michigan Slips Past Indiana in Game One
April 2, 2011
ANN ARBOR, Mich. - The Indiana Hoosiers (19-14, 1-2 Big Ten) scored a run in the top of the seventh inning but No. 3 Michigan (33-2, 3-0 Big Ten) was able to hold on for the 2-1 victory in the first game of a doubleheader at Alumni Field. Breanna Sacuedo's RBI single in the top of the seventh inning accounted for the lone Indiana run.
Indiana's Morgan Melloh (15-13) and Michigan's Jordan Taylor (17-2), two of the top pitchers in the conference, battled it out in the circle the entire game. In the end, it was Taylor that logged the win while Melloh was saddled with the loss.
Melloh's line showed two runs scored on five hits and five walks to go with seven strikeouts. Taylor gave up one run on six hits and zero walks in addition to 10 strikeouts.
Michigan got on the board in the bottom of the fourth inning on a RBI double by Caitlin Blanchard. Two innings later it was Blanchard again, this time hitting a solo home run to right field to provide what proved to be the winning run.
In the top of the seventh inning, freshman Jenna Abraham lined a double to right field, her second of the game, with one out in the inning. A groundout by Samantha Heyman moved Abraham to third base so Saucedo's high chopper to shortstop was just enough to allow Abraham to score.
The loss extended the Hoosiers losing skid to Michigan to 35 games dating back to the 1996 season.
