Hoosiers Battle No. 8 Northwestern In 3-1 Loss
April 4, 2009
EVANSTON, Ill. - The Indiana Hoosiers got a game-tying home run from Emily Bergeson in the top of the sixth inning but the Northwestern Wildcats pushed across two runs in the bottom of the inning to escape with a 3-1 win at Sharon Drysdale Field on Saturday.
Just as Nicole Pauly did in the bottom of the fourth inning for Northwestern, Indiana senior shortstop Emily Bergeson hit a no-doubt home run to left field in the top of the sixth inning to even the score at 1-1. The round tripper was her team-leading fifth of the season and 14th of her career.
Indiana (5-25, 1-4 Big Ten) was kept in the game by a spectacular pitching performance from Sara Olson (4-7). The sophomore from nearby Orland Park, Ill., allowed just two earned runs on six hits while striking out one and walking three against a Northwestern (21-7, 7-0 Big Ten) team that was hitting .297 as a team coming into the game.
Lauren Delaney (20-6) went the distance in the circle for the Wilcats to get the win and gave up just one hit, the home run to Bergeson, while striking out eight and walking three.
The Wildcats got the leadoff batter on in the bottom of the fifth inning but a line drive back through the middle was snared by Olson, who calmly flipped the ball to first base for a double play as the runner was going on the play. A bunt single by NU leadoff batter Robin Thompson with two outs brought the top hitter in the Big Ten to the plate in Tammy Williams. However, Olson forced Williams to hit a ground ball to Samantha Berenter at third base for the final out of the inning.
Due to the weather in the forecast for Sunday, the teams will return to the field for game two of the doubleheader later this afternoon.
