Wildcat Bats Power Past Hoosiers in Game Two
April 4, 2009
EVANSTON, Ill. - In game two of a doubleheader with No. 8 Northwestern, the Indiana Hoosiers collected five hits but were unable to break into the scoring column while the Wildcats used a pair of three-run home runs to claim an 8-0 win in five innings at Sharon Drysdale Field on Saturday.
Indiana (5-26, 1-5 Big Ten) started the game with a golden opportunity to get on the board first in the second inning after Sara Olson led off the inning with a double deep to left center that took one hop before hitting the fence. A groundout by Jennifer Glueckert advanced Olson to third with just one out but NU pitcher Lauren Delaney induced a ground out to third and a strikeout to end the threat and keep the game scoreless.
But in the bottom of the second the Northwestern (22-7, 8-0 Big Ten) bats caught up to Indiana starting pitcher Ashley Hobbs (1-9). Hobbs outing was brought to an abrupt halt after Erin Dyer hit a three-run home run to left center field Olson was brought in to pitch, after starting the game at first base, but the Wildcats would add two more runs in the inning to take a 5-0 lead.
The IU bats were back at it against Delaney in the third inning with a leadoff single by Kelli Ritchison, who stole second ahead of Kelsey Stander's infield single to put runners at the corners with only one out. Following a wild pitch to move Stander into scoring position, Delaney once again got the last two outs to keep the Hoosiers off the board.
The Wildcats' final three runs came on a line-drive home run off the bat of Tammy Williams, her tenth home of run of the season.
Hobbs final line showed four runs on three hits in an inning and a third while Olson went the final 2.2 innings and allowed four runs, three earned on four hits and two walks.
The Hoosiers will return home to the IU Softball Field on Wednesday with a Big Ten doubleheader against No. 17 Ohio State starting at 2 p.m.
